Beyond the Disney Gates – Exploring Orlando & Central Florida

After days of rides, churros, and Mickey, you might just be ready for a break. Orlando is known for its multitude of theme parks and they are all wonderful. But you might want to venture beyond the Disney Gates into Central Florida.

Orlando is basically mid-way between the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic. This means, while getting to a beach is an undertaking of 1-2 hours each way, it means you have choices! Venture west to Tampa and St. Petersburg for a day in the coastal city. Maybe take in a Tampa Bay Rays ball game or even an NHL hockey game. What?! They play hockey in Orlando?! You bet. The Lightning even won the Stanley Cup in 2020.

A bit west of Tampa is Clearwater Beach. This lovely Gulf Beach enjoys a normally gentle surf and the balmy Gulf waters. Indulge on the beach, then escape the sun at the Clearwater Beach Aquarium. This facility specializes in rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured marine animals. Learn about their mission and enjoy the animals in this tranquil setting. Clearwater Beach Aquarium was the filming location for part of Dolphin’s Tale. You can learn all about Winter the Dolphin and her incredible story while visiting the Aquarium.

On the opposite coast, immerse yourself in the history and future of Space Exploration at Kennedy Space Center and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. A full day can be spent on the space coast enjoying exhibits, a behind the scenes tour of NASA launch operations, and the coastal preserved wilderness. For information on booking tours at Kennedy Space Center, check here: https://www.viator.com/Orlando-attractions/Kennedy-Space-Center/d663-a98?pid=P00058239&mcid=42383&medium=link

If you are really a space geek or have young astronauts onboard your mission, head over to Titusville. Space View Park has a fantastic historical display of America’s Space Program. Loose yourself in history as you wander through the memorials and plaques.

When you are done wandering through the park, grab a meal at Dixie Crossroads. This traditional astronaut hangout is a ton of fun.

If dipping your toes in the Atlantic is on your list, head down to Cocoa Beach. This huge white sand beach is perfect for sunning, swimming, and beach activities. Park near Ron Jon’s so you can go to the world’s largest surf shop. Bonus if you go at midnight! They’re open 24 hours after all.

A midnight visit to Ron Jon’s followed by a quick nap on Cocoa Beach is a tradition for NASA employees needing to report in for a dawn launch. Who knows? You might meet the future NASA Administrator shopping for a surfboard at midnight.

Back in the greater Orlando area, there are few things as unique to the South as an airboat ride. Several operators offer tours of differing lengths through the headwaters of the Everglades. See fish jumping out of the water, birds enjoying the cool environment, and gators. Tons of gators! Many of the operators do little advertising beyond hotel rack flyers. Head to the concierge desk at your resort and ask for a list of area operators. Note that some only take cash. You will need a car and a sense of adventure to find some of the pick up points. We’ve literally met airboat operators in city parks, in residential area boat launches, and even just the side of the road. That’s part of the charm! Go explore!!

North of Orlando is the City of St. Augustine, Florida. This city’s leaders are in constant debate with the leaders of Santa Fe, New Mexico to claim the title of “America’s oldest city.” What cannot be disputed is that St. Augustine, founded in 1565, is the oldest European Settlement in the US. Enjoy the cobblestone roads around the historic center, shopping in the little shops, and the Spanish Colonial Atmosphere. Then head to Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Tis fortress was built to protect the settlement from British troops. Wander through the monument and gaze out on the islands separating you from the open Atlantic. All that’s missing from the scene is a Spanish galleon coming into port.

Castillo de San Marcos is a National Park Service Site. Information on open hours, ranger led talks, and directions can be found on their page: https://www.nps.gov/casa/index.htm

Also of note in St. Augustine is the Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. The history and setting for this lighthouse is spectacular. https://www.staugustinelighthouse.org/

If gators fascinate you, then a day at Gatorland is for you! This kitschy “theme park’s” façade harkens back to Florida’s early tourist days. Walk inside and you will learn more about gators than you ever thought you needed to know. Plus you’ll get so see gators of all sizes. Gatorland also has a host of other animals that can no longer live in the wild. Meet tortoises, birds, bobcats, Florida Panthers, and even a Serval. All are permanent residents of the facility. Gatorland is a ton of fun for animal lovers of all ages.
