Never on Sunday

Rose Parade Planning for a Sunday New Years

Never on Sunday! When you think of traditions, the Rose Parade likely comes to mind. Every year since 1890, the New Year is celebrated in Pasadena, California by the annual Tournament of Roses parade. The parade was started by a group of local businessmen interested in showing off California’s glorious winter weather to their friends and relatives freezing on the east coast. The trouble was, what to do on Sunday? The parade passed several churches and the clergy were concerned about the parade crowds disrupting Sunday Service.

If you attend the parade in January 2023, you’ll see Tournament Volunteers wearing these buttons.

Compounding the church issue was horses. Horses? Yes…horses. This was the 1890’s and, unless residents of Pasadena were technologically ahead of the rest of the planet, they travelled to church on horseback. The wealthy families had horses and carriages. It would be 2 decades before motorized vehicles would pass along city streets. Parade crowds could spook the horses tethered up outside the churches.

The result? Rose Parade officials in those early days agreed that when January 1 landed on a Sunday, the parade would slide 24 hours to January 2. Today horses are not a common scene outside churches and side streets allow church patrons to access houses of worship. But the tradition remains.

This coming New Years falls on a Sunday, meaning both the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game will occur on Monday January 2, 2023. You can enjoy your New Years Eve and not have to get up at 3am to find your parade viewing spot.
